Changing NDIS providers

You can change NDIS providers at any time. Your funding belongs to your plan, not to a provider. The work is in timing the handover so support doesn't drop on the way.

  • Last checked 2 October 2026

Before you start

  • Read your service agreement. It sets the notice period and how to end the agreement. Notice periods vary between providers.
  • Check the new provider's registration. Since 1 July 2026, SIL providers must be registered with the NDIS Commission (or have applied). Check the NDIS Provider Register.
  • Know how your plan is managed. Agency-managed, plan-managed and self-managed plans have slightly different steps.

Steps

  1. Talk to the new provider. Confirm they can start, on which days, and with which staff.
  2. Agree a start date that overlaps or meets the old provider's last day.
  3. Give your current provider written notice with the end date.
  4. Sign a service agreement with the new provider.
  5. Update the NDIS: end the old provider connection and add the new one in the my NDIS portal or through your my NDIS contact. If you're plan-managed, tell your plan manager too.
  6. Ask the old provider for final invoices and keep copies. Participants must keep records of supports and payments for 3 years.

If you're changing SIL providers

  • Support and housing are separate. Your SIL provider and your home's landlord or SDA provider may be different organisations. Changing one doesn't automatically end the other. Check your tenancy or SDA residency agreement.
  • Moving house too? Your SIL funding is based on your support needs and your shared-living arrangement. A move may mean your funding needs checking. Talk to your support coordinator or my NDIS contact early.
  • Housemates matter. Ask who you'd live with and how shared shifts are arranged.

Keep support steady during the handover

Ask your current provider to share, with your consent:

  • behaviour support plan and any restrictive practice authorisations
  • medication plan and current chart
  • risk assessments, health care plans, meal-time plans
  • daily routines and what works, in your words
  • key contacts: GP, practitioners, family, guardian

Ask the new provider for shifts where their staff meet you before they work alone.

If you're leaving because of a problem

You can still raise a complaint with the provider, and with the NDIS Commission on 1800 035 544. Making a complaint doesn't affect your right to change.
