About this service

What is short-term accommodation?

Short-term accommodation (STA), sometimes called respite, is a short stay away from your usual home. It can give families and carers a planned break, while giving the participant disability-related support in a different setting.

A stay can include accommodation, personal care and the support you need to take part in activities. Meals, the activities themselves (such as tickets or entry fees) and personal spending aren't covered by NDIS funding, so you pay for these yourself.

It's included in a plan as flexible funding in the Core budget.

How much STA can you use?

The NDIA generally funds STA for up to 28 days a year, usually in stays of up to 14 days at a time. It can be used as a longer planned break or as shorter, regular stays.

Your plan, available funding and support needs decide what's available to you. Check your plan, or talk to your support coordinator, plan manager or us before making arrangements.

Respite in your own home

Prefer to stay at home? We can provide respite support in your own home, so your usual carers can take a planned break while you're supported in familiar surroundings.

In-home respite is different from a short stay away from home. The support, price and funding depend on your plan and the services you need, so talk with your support coordinator, plan manager or us about the right arrangement.

What does a stay cost?

The cost of a short stay depends on the dates, the support you need, whether support is shared, overnight arrangements and what's included. Older per-day STA items can still be claimed until 30 June 2027, so ask any provider how they price a stay.

Estimate a stay with our free respite cost tool. Preparing a referral? Use our STA referral checklist.

The tool gives an estimate using NDIS price limits. It isn't a quote, a funding decision or confirmation of availability.
